Park Avenue Hotel on the west side of Park Avenue from 32nd to 33rd Streets. Built in 1869-78 by dry goods merchant Alexander Tierney Stewart, the Park Avenue Hotel was meant to be a wholesome environment for the new generation of independent female office and factory workers who otherwise had to put up with possibly immoral boarding houses. The great experiment failed; the cast iron structure became a regular hotel within a few years.
The subway station in this photo is the current 33rd Street Station for the 6 train.
