Flags, flags, flags—they made this section of Fifth Avenue a favorite subject for the artist Childe Hassam. Note how the slower pace and volume of traffic made pedestrians feel safe pausing in the middle of the street. Most of the buildings in this photograph are still there—it is automobile traffic that is the enemy of the urban experience. This is also the future site of the Empire State Building.
