East 125th Street Harlem circa 1940.  Feigenspan Beer (founded in Newark NJ in 1875) was bought out by Ballantine Breweries in 1943.  United Cigar Stores, at it's high point was the largest cigar chain in the world, had over 3,000 stores. Due to the depression it suffered great losses (at that time it operated 900 cigar and 200 drug stores), went bankrupt by 1932 and then reorganized soon afterwards.  By 1951 it operated 1,300 stores.  Subsequently, it merged with the Whelan Drug chain.
