According to figures published in Fortune, the Chrysler Corporation’s net income shrank from a profit of more than thirty million dollars in 1928, to a deficit of some eleven million dollars in 1932. By 1936, when the salon was renovated, things had begun to look up. In August of the previous year, Chrysler became the first automotive maker to raise its rate of production above the figures for the great boom year of 1929. Here, taxis lined 42nd Street.
